Congenital and Valvular Heart Disease is part of the Cardiovascular System section of Pathology. Practise 1 exam-style MCQs for NEET PG, FMGE, INI-CET and NEET SS, each with the correct answer and a detailed explanation.
Congenital and Valvular Heart Disease MCQs build from valvular lesions such as mitral stenosis toward their haemodynamic consequences, including the dependent pulmonary oedema that gathers at the lung bases. These are high-yield NEET PG questions for FMGE, INI-CET and NEET SS.
Sample Congenital and Valvular Heart Disease MCQs with answers
Sample MCQ #1
A 68-year-old female patient having long standing cardiac valvular disease of mitral stenosis. She is getting respiratory distress which is slowly increasing day by day. Mainly reason is due to engorgement of pulmonary capillaries leading to pulmonary edema. Which of the following statements are true regarding pulmonary edema?
AIt initiates from the basal region of the lower lobes
BHeart failure cells are present
CFibrosis and thickening of the wall can cause brown induration
DAll of the above
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: D. All of the above
(a) Edema accumulates initially in the basal regions of the lower lobes because hydrostatic pressure is greatest in these sites (dependent edema). Histologically, the alveolar capillaries are engorged, and there is an intraalveolar transudates. (b) Alveolar microhemorrhages and hemosiderin-laden macrophages (HLMs) ("heart failure" cells) may be present. (c) In long-standing pulmonary congestion (e.g., as seen in mitral stenosis), hemosiderin-laden macrophages are abundant, and fibrosis and thickening of the alveolar walls cause the soggy lungs to become firm and brown (brown induration).
