Sample Instruments & Sutures MCQs with answers
Sample MCQ #1
Best gas used for creating pneumoperitonium at laparoscopy is :
AN2
B02
CCO2
DN20 Goniometer is used
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: C. CO2
CO2 CO, is the gas used to create pneumoperitoneum during laparoscopy. Other option is - N20 : But it is expensive, less soluble in blood and supports combustion. Also know : Instrument used for creating pneumoperitoneum is veress needle. Flow Rate of CO, for creating pneumoperitoneum 200 - 2000 ml/min & pressure between 15 - 25 mm of Hg.
Sample MCQ #2
Which among the following is a false statement for physical structure of suture material?
AMonofilament sutures are smooth
BMonofilament sutures have poor knotting ability
CMultifilament sutures have good knotting ability
DMultifilament sutures have less bacterial contamination
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: D. Multifilament sutures have less bacterial contamination
Physical structure . Suture material may be monofilament or multifilament. Monofilament suture material is smooth and tends to slide through tissues easily without any sawing action, but is more difficult to knot effectively. Such material can be easily damaged by gripping it with needle holder or forceps and this can lead to fracture of the suture material. Multifilament or braided sutures are much easier to knot, but have a surface area of several thousand times that of monofilament sutures and thus have a capillary action and interstices where bacteria may lodge and be responsible for persistent infection or sinuses. In order to overcome some of these problems, certain materials are produced as a braided suture, which is coated with silicone in order to make it smooth. Sample MCQ #3
Which among the following is an absorbable suture material?
APolyester
BPolyamide
CProlene
DPolygalactin
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: D. Polygalactin
Polygalactin also known as vicryl is a monofilament synthetic absorbable suture used in CBD, ureter and bowel surgeries Reference : Love & Bailey short practice of surgery, chapter: 7, Edition: 27th, Pg: 92
Sample MCQ #4
All of the following statements are incorrect regarding Torsion of testis except?
APerinatal torsion is usually intravaginal
BTorsion of testis must be relieved within 6-8 hours of onset of symptoms
CAt operation, viability of testis is assessed before de rotation
DIf salvageable, three point fixation of both testes with absorbable suture is performed
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: B. Torsion of testis must be relieved within 6-8 hours of onset of symptoms
Option A Testicular torsion is most common in adolescents, but may occur at any age and is usually inside the tunica vaginalis. Perinatal torsion differs and is usually extravaginal. Option C At operation, viability of the testis is assessed after de rotation. Option D If salvageable, three-point fixation of both testes with non-absorbable sutures is performed. Sample MCQ #5
What should be the minimum length of the suture material left after cutting to avoid unravelling?
A1-2 mm
B3-4 mm
C4-5 mm
D5-6 mm
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: A. 1-2 mm
When the suture is cut after knotting, the ends should be left about 1-2 mm long to prevent unraveling. This is particularly important when using monofilament material. Reference : Love & Bailey short practice of surgery, chapter: 7, Edition: 27th, Pg: 96
Sample MCQ #6
The conversion factor to find out the outer diameter of a cannula in millimeters, expressed in French size is
A0.66
B0.33
C0.03
D3.3
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: B. 0.33
The French scale begins at zero, and each increment of one French unit represents an increase of 1/3 (0.33) millimeter in outer diameter (3): i.e., French size × 0.33 = outside diameter (mm). Thus, a catheter that is 5 French units in size will have an outer diameter of 5 × 0.33 = 1.65 mm Reference: E Book of Baheti's Understanding Anesthetist Equipments and Procedures a Pratical Approach First Edition Chapter 33 Page No 339 -334.
