The number of blows inflicted is difficult to determine if contusions join together 4. Subgaleal hematoma does not show any colour change 5. Bruises of the scalp are not associated with edema

A1, 2 and 3
B3, 4 and 5
C1, 2 and 5
D2, 3 and 4
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: D. 2, 3 and 4

Contusions may occur in the superficial fascia , in the temporalis muscle, in the loose areolar tissue between galea aponeurotica and the pericranium. They are better felt than seen. Multiple contusions of the scalp may join together and it is often difficult to determine the number of blows inflicted. The bruises of the scalp are associated with prominent edema . Subgaleal hematoma remains the same colour till it resolves. Reference: The Essentials of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, 35 th edition, K S Narayan Reddy, Page No.185

Sample MCQ #2

Which of the following sites is more prone to bruising with blunt trauma?

AShin
BAbdomen
CButtocks
DArms
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: A. Shin

The shins are particularly prone to bruising with blunt trauma. Resilient areas, such as the abdominal wall and buttocks , bruise less with a given impact than a region where underlying bone acts as an anvil with the skin between the bone and the inflicting force. The head, chest, and shins are the examples. A direct trauma to the shin bone can damage the periosteum (known as bone bruising of the tibia or periosteal contusion). This causes a collection of blood underneath the periosteum of the shin bone. Reference : Knight's Forensic Pathology, 4 th Edition, Page Number-141.

Sample MCQ #3

What type of injury is scalping?

AContusion
BAbrasion
CIncised wound
DLaceration
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: D. Laceration

Scalping is a type of laceration. Here, a large area of skin and subcutaneous tissue is rolled off the scalp. These lesions could be caused by the traction of hair being trapped in machinery. This was formerly a common industrial accident. Hairnets were worn by women factory workers to prevent this. Flaying is also a type of laceration, caused by shearing force. This is where a large area of skin and subcutaneous tissue is rolled off a limb. Reference: Knight's Forensic Pathology, 4 th Edition Page No. 147, 148

Sample MCQ #4

In an injury, it is noted under microscope that hair bulbs were crushed. Most likely the injury is:

AAbrasion
BIncised wound
CLacerated wound
DStab wound
Show Answer & Explanation ▾
✓ Correct Answer: C. Lacerated wound

If Laceration impact by heavy blunt weapon over area where hairs are present, hair bulb located in dermis will be get crushed. Other options: In an abrasion , only the epidermal layer of the skin is damaged, with no injury to underlying structures. Since the hair bulb is located in the dermis layer, it remains unaffected by an abrasion. (B): Incised wound : Incised wounds are caused by sharp objects and typically do not crush underlying tissues like hair bulbs. (D) : Stab wound : Caused by a sharp object penetrating the skin, typically without crushing.
